BEIJING, Oct 4 (Reuters) -China's Commerce Ministry on Friday blasted the EU's decision to impose tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles as "unfair" and "unreasonable", but held out the prospect that the two sides could still "resolve the issue through negotiations".
China's trade ministry said technical-level consultations had continued with the European Union and were scheduled to resume on Monday.
"China firmly opposes the EU's draft final ruling, but has also noted the EU's political will to continue to resolve the issue through negotiations," it said.
China's commerce ministry has floated the idea of offering a "flexible price commitment" - some form of agreed minimum vehicle pricing on imports - to address concerns in Europe that cheap Chinese EVs would over-run the market there.
In Friday's statement, the ministry said it believed that approach would "avoid escalation of trade frictions".
"The Chinese side has repeatedly and fully listened to the demands and opinions of the Chinese and European industries, and has demonstrated an open and cooperative attitude and maximum flexibility throughout the consultation," the statement said.
China will take all measures to firmly safeguard interests of Chinese enterprises, the ministry added.
The ministry said the EU trade policy decision would hinder China's trade with Europe, delay the transition to sustainable energy there, and delay progress in "global joint efforts to deal with climate change".
It said China's world-leading EV industry was the result of competition and innovation - not government subsidies as the European Commission had determined.
