BOFA CLIENTS TAP INTO MAJORITY OF SECTORS, BUT BARREL OUT OF TECH

Clients were buyers of U.S. equities last week, BofA Securities equity and quant strategist Jill Carey Hall says in her latest report on equity client flows.

According to Hall, in a week where the S&P 500 index .SPX rose just 0.2%, and gained for a fourth straight week, client net buying of U.S. equities came in at +$0.6B.

Clients bought single stocks and ETFs with larger inflows in the latter. Large and small caps experienced inflows while mid caps saw outflows.

"Private clients were the sole net buyers (besides corporates), with inflows from this group the first since early Sept., while institutional and hedge fund clients both sold equities for a second week in a row," writes Hall in her note.

Hall adds that corporate client buybacks slowed last week, but continue to track above seasonal levels as a percentage of S&P 500 market cap. With this, she says trailing 52-week buybacks as a percentage of S&P 500 market cap are at a record high.

In terms of the GICS sectors, Hall says clients bought stocks in six of the 11 groups, led by consumer discretionary, communication services and healthcare.

Tech and industrials saw the largest outflows. In fact, Hall says tech's net sales were the biggest since August.

Real estate, at seven weeks, has the longest recent selling streak.

Regarding ETFs, she says clients bought growth and value ETFs but sold blend. They snapped up large cap/broad market ETFs, but sold small/mid cap ETFs.

Seven of the 11 sectors saw ETF inflows, with utilities on top. Consumer discretionary, real estate and healthcare ETFs also saw inflows.
