WALL STREET TANKS: MIDDLE EAST, EARNINGS, CPI IN VIEW

U.S. Treasury yields and Middle East tensions both rose on Monday, prompting a broad flight from risk as investors parsed recent economic data and recalibrated their bets regarding the Fed's next steps.

Each of the three main U.S. stock indexes ended the session lower, with five of the 11 major S&P 500 sectors losing 1% or more.

Energy shares .SPNY provided a rare glimpse of green, lifted by the rising tide of rising oil prices CLc1 due to supply concerns arising from the middle east conflict , which passed a grim anniversary even as it spread to Lebanon.

The CBOE Market Volatility index .VIX, which is thought to reflect investor anxiety, and which is due to settle shortly, is bound to reach its highest closing level in over a month.

Chip stocks also proved somewhat resilient with the SOX .SOX just inching lower. AI darling Nvidia NVDA.O gained 2.3% on the day.

Markets continue to chew on Friday's blockbuster jobs report and adjusting their bets regarding the path of Powell & Co's policy easing/interest rate cuts.

While the central bank hinted at the possibility that it would lower the Fed funds target rate by 1 full percentage point by year-end, financial markets are currently banking on a 84% probability of a 25 bps at the conclusion of next month's meeting, with a rising 16% chance of standing pat, according to CME's FedWatch tool.

Investors on the hunt for catalysts need look no further than the end of the week

On Thursday and Friday, the Labor Department releases its CPI and PPI inflation data.

And on Friday three big U.S. banks crack a bottle of champagne against the hull of third-quarter earnings season, thereby unofficially launching it.
